This is pretty much what pops into my head when I have to listen to asinine arguments about science and religion. “Hurr hurr, religious people are dumb, go science!” Or “science doesn’t give us anything, religion is the key”
Look, at the end of the day it’s always about what you DO with what you’ve been given or what you’ve learned. If you’re having ethical arguments about what’s better, or who is better, trying to reduce that down to two categories is the sign of poor and lazy thinking.
I’m neither a religious individual nor am I a hardcore atheist, I’m just a philosopher who gets pissed off when people don’t expand their thinking. If you’re an agnostic or atheist who hates it when religious people say you have no morals or behave a certain way because of your views, you hate it because you know it’s not true. You have personal knowledge that your life and experiences are vast and complex and trying to boil down your entire personality because you accept science as empirically true is definitely the wrong thing to do.
So why the fuck would you then turn around and use the exact same kind of thinking on religious people? Religion is a huge placeholder for a significant number of ideas about the world. Not only is it not fair to dismiss all of it categorically, but you look like an idiot when you do so because you aren’t being any more elegant in your thinking than the religious person who dismisses atheists.
